Raincoats for Monkeys

The ruins of the abandoned Tughlaqabad fort in Delhi, are home to thousands of Rhesus macaques, monkeys. Over the years, I have clicked hundreds of pictures of them during my multiple visits to the area. Monkeys playing with polythene bags, carelessly abandoned by people are my favourite pictures from that series.

Seeing them play was entertaining, I got some good pictures, yet I felt sad. It is dangerous for the monkeys. Baby monkeys think, the bags are toys and place them over their own heads. The plastic could get sucked into their mouths or noses, and they might suffocate. They could chew up a bag, suck a piece into their windpipe, obstruct the air passage, and suffocate them as a result.

Plastic bags are a threat to the environment too, they don’t break down easily. They get into soil, release toxic chemicals and harm the environment.
